Debt Relief Can Work
For consumers who need debt management assistance, debt relief services can work in certain circumstances, but the outcome of such services depend heavily upon the circumstances of the individual seeking assistance.
For individuals who have already experienced trouble with paying their bills, a debt relief service may help. If you have fallen behind in your monthly payments, you cannot negotiate with your creditors or need help with this process, or you cannot make the minimum payments required on your debts, a debt relief service can help.
In addition to providing you with counseling and resources to help you budget, and plan your finances, debt relief agencies can help you negotiate payment plans and interest rates with your creditors. Using a debt relief agency may put a black mark on your credit record, however, it is unlikely to be as damaging as a string of unpaid bills or delinquent accounts. In this case, using the services of a debt relief agency is likely to be the quickest way to repair your credit and get your finances back on track.
For individuals who are not behind in their bills and have not missed payments, using a debt relief service is not likely to be of help. If you have a good credit rating, introducing a debt relief company into the picture will likely do more harm than good.
Instead, try negotiating directly with your creditors to reduce your interest rate. If you are not already working from a budget or spending plan, try creating one on your own. In this situation, taking control of your finances is better done on your own. If you think you need help with budgeting and planning, consult your financial institution to see if they have workshops on personal finance. Also look for guidance from your local community college or county extension service.
If you do choose to work with a debt relief service, make sure they are professionally recognized or accredited. Understand exactly what services they offer and what their fees are. Also make sure you understand what your monthly payment will be and who will be responsible for making it. If the company takes in a monthly payment from you, verify with your creditors that they have signed onto your debt relief plan and that their understanding of the agreement matches yours. If there is a disconnect, do not make your payments through the debt relief service until all of your questions have been answered and you’re sure that you and your creditors have the same understanding of your repayment agreement.
