Want EDGE on your T Mobile iPhone?
I’ve had my hacked iPhone for quite a while now and always wondered if I can use T Mobile’s data plan on it. I called customer service and asked if I would be able to run their data plan on my iPhone, the person I spoke with told me that it was impossible and cannot be done. I refused to believe this so I did my research online on using T Mobile’s EDGE with the iPhone, and low and behold there are quite a few iPhone owners out there using the T Mobile EDGE connection. It looks like you CAN USE T Mobile’s T Zones internet connection on your iPhone. The best part is it only cost $5.99 a month! Now this requires a simple hack but it is very easy to follow, let’s get to it:
You will need iBrickr to browse the file system of your iPhone.
Download iBrickr
If you’ve never used iBrickr before visit the link below for a video tutorial:
View tutorial
If iBrickr doesn’t work for you, try using WINSCP, it will also allow you to view and modify the files in your iPhone much like iBrickr.
Once you have iBrickr downloaded and the PXL files installed on your iPhone, you will launch iBrickr.exe. You’ll see the main interface, click on files to browse your phone’s file system.
( This procedure is for firmware 1.1.2 and under )
Locate /private/var/root
Launch notepad and paste this code:

Save the file as proxy.pac and upload it to /private/var/root
Right-click this file and select “Save Link As”, you need to save the file as preferences.plist, you will then upload preferences.plist into the following iPhone directory:
/private/var/root/Library/Preferences/
SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
NOTE : If you are on firmware 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, upload the preferences.plist to this directory:
/private/var/preferences/SystemConfiguration
This will over write the current file that’s already in that directory.
Now grab your iPhone and tap Settings – General – Network – EDGE. The APN you will use is wap.voicestream.com, username and password will be guest. Reboot your iPhone and voila…you should be able to browse online using EDGE.
NOTE: After performing this hack I noticed that EDGE interfered with my wifi connection at home. If this happens to you, here’s a very helpful solution. Launch iBrickr.exe again, this time we will click on Applications. Click on the Browse Applications button, this will launch a list of 3rd party apps you can install at your will, for our purpose we will install an app called Services. Basically this will allow you to turn off WiFi, Bluetooth, and EDGE.
Once you’re done with the installation, iPhone will reboot and on your Springboard you should see a Services icon, tap the icon and here you can toggle between your EDGE and WiFi connection. Here’s the screenshot:

If you’re on firmware 3.0, there’s no need to perform this hack. All you need to do is set up your APN. Go to Settings – General – Network – Cellular Data Network. In the APN field enter wap.voicestream.com, leave the username and password blank. That’s all you need to do to get EDGE running on your iPhone.

T-Mobile USA has changed the IP address in their system for the T-Zones service. For anyone on 1.1.4 and below you will have to SSH in and manually change your settings or upgrade to 2.0+ and install the NEW T-Zones Hack provided by Big Boss in Cydia. For anyone on 2.0+ who has the previous hack installed you will need to update to the new one.
You must subscribe to the $5.99 T-Zones service for the T-Zones hack to work.
“For 1.1.x users that really don’t want to upgrade, you can fix proxy.pac yourself but editing the file /var/preferences/proxy.pac and changing 10.0.0.0? to 25.0.0.0”

Download the zipped file below and used these files if you are having trouble renaming your files. This zipped file contains proxy.pac and preferences.plist – preferences.plist may just show up as preferences depending on your pc, this is fine…just upload these 2 files to the appropriate locations.

This hack works on firmware 1.1.1. I finally updated my firmware and EDGE works flawlessly. I have both the 4GB and 8GB updated to 1.1.1 and so far everything is working as it should.

Updated 10/23/07There seems to be a bit of confusion about making this hack work, let me just clarify a few things.
- You don’t have to buy the $19.99 data plan with T Mobile, the $5.99 plan is all you need.
- There are 2 files you need in order to make this work, proxy.pac and preferences.plist (both are on this page).
- To enable EDGE go to Settings – General – Network – EDGE. APN will be wap.voicestream.com, username and password will be guest.

Does anyone know which kind of video information are supported? I bear in mind the Intuition only might dl 3gp utilizing opera mini. I downloaded the twist ap, possibly that is the problem? How can I watch movies from websites other than youtube? Which file sorts? Normally I am given the choice of 3gp or mpeg4. Cannot get either to work. Thanks in your time! Hello, I have been looking through a lot of the comments and I still have a few questions. I currently have an iPhone 3GS 16GB on 3.1.3 firmware. I am currently contracted with AT&T and plan to leave to T-Mobile. As far as I understand, I will just jailbreak & unlock my iphone, get any phone through them, come home and add the $9.99 data plan and just pop my new sim in? Thanks for your time

Yup that’s all you need to do, you may need to reset the network settings on your phone in order to get EDGE running.

Thank you for the quick reply! I have successfully unlocked and jail broken my iPhone, and tomorrow will be signing up with t-mobile. I had just one more question however, I have read around that I may need to also download something from cydia in regards to the plan that I will have with t-mobile, can you verify if this is still needed? ijus bought a iphone 3g8gb. i am having trouble recieving picture mail and messages. i called tmobile and they had me to put in the apn as ecp.tmobile.com and it gave me email but still no pics! i also am having trouble with being able to download apps and ringtones. someone help please cause i am going crazy with this phone!

It is hacked and Jailbroken to work with Tmobile. I pay a woppin 9.99 for unlimited Internet. It’s not 3G speed but Edge works great.

What did you do to get it working? I signed up for Sidekick $1/day unlimited, but get Web2Go errors when trying to access anything. Switched to non-Sidekick $15/month and no change.

I have never told the t-mobile sales rep that I own an iphone but when went to t-mobile to ask them what plan i can have, they checked on my account and apparently they knew that i have an iphone and told me the only available option for me is the $29.99 plan. How did they figure out that I have an iphon? Any suggestion/solution for what I can do?

Go to T-mobile.com and log in to your account, there you’ll have the data plan options. Add the cheapest data plan to your line, that should work. Regardless of what they say or what phone you have they should be able to give what ever data plan you choose, at the end of the day you are the costumer!

I called t-mobile and added the $10 data plan which is their lowest today, then entered internet2.voicestream.com for the APN, restarted iphone….then their was internet. Internet is not the fastest but it won’t cost me an extra $30 added to my bill.

I called T-Mobile’s 611 on May 5th around 3pm, and asked to speak with customer service. Once i had someone on the line, i simply asked which data planes were available. The person informed thier was only two options:
$29.99 for smartphones
or
$9.99 for simple phones.
I then asked him to add the $9.99 to my cel line, and that was the end of it.
However i did not go into details about what phone I was using, I avoided to inform him of such.
Currently Using iphone 3G 8GB 3.0 Jailbroken and Unlocked on T-Mobile.

Yup not many people know about the $9.99 plan working with an unlocked TMobile iPhone. It’s a shame they’re no longer offering the $5.99 TZones plan, that’s really a great deal! The $9.99 plan plan is not bad either, considering it gives you unlimited data.

I try to get T-zone plan, but T-mobile told me that If I use Iphone, then I need to get other dataplan which is $29.99 per months.

What the,,
I called T-mobile and that told me
they no longer to have new t-zone plan, which was someone how signed t-zon before, they can keep that plan and price, but new data plan user only can sign for $29.99m plan.
So, question. If I want to get my iphone onto t-mobile, what exactly would I have to do? Since it can do 3G and TMobile has 3G zones (my school area and work area have 3G), will I lose my 3G capabilities?

The iPhone is not compatible with TMobile’s 3G network, so yes you will lose 3G capabilities.
I have a IPHONE 3G unlocked , but I have a contract with AT&T(just voice) is there any way I can get the T-mobile’s edge plan along with my AT&T voice plan and if not does anyone know any cheaper 3G service plan I can use for my unlocked Iphone

You can only use T Mobile’s EDGE if you are using their SIM card…my advice is unlock your iPhone and sign up with T Mobile. Pay $9.99 a month for unlimited data.

If the SIM hasn’t been activated then you’ll need to call TMobile and ask them to activate it for you.
I tried looking through the posts but did not notice any saying if the $9.99 plan on T-mobile is unlimited. I did see that the t-zones one is unlimited, but I don’t have it already so I probably won’t be able to get it. If there is a limit to the data per month, will T-mobile charge you for overages? I just unlocked my iphone and am about to add something to my plan for internet access. Also is there a way to see how much of your alloted data per month has been used to help you track and avoid overage charges? Just let me know when you get a chance… thanks so much!

T-mobile now has an “Even More Plus” plan which includes unlimited web. It’s a month-to-month contract and it’s pretty cheap if you only get the 500 talk. I don’t know about adding web service and and tracking it through a regular plan though.

well t mobile got rid of their t-zone plan. you will now hve to get the $9.99 plan. just call 611 and say english whwn the computer asks you. say talk to a representivie amd then say “add data plan”. when a t-mobile rep picks up justsay you want to add t-zones, and they will say that they dont have that anymore. so then ask for their lowest data plan opition. to add to your number.
thats it. you got data plan. i dont believ you have to tell them yo have an iphone. you can if you want, but i didnt.

I’m also from Houston. I recently got my iPhone with v3.0 firmware hacked to use the t-mobile network, but for voice/text only. So I called to add a data plan, and the cheapest one they offer now is $9.99/mo. for unlimited web. I requested that, and used your recent update advice to just add the “wap.voicestream.com” to the APN settings, yet it doesn’t work still; and whenever I try to load something in Safari, it just says “Subscription Upgrade Required,” and so whenever I view other internet plans that it says will work with the device, the cheapest option is $24.99/mo. Is there a way of getting the $9.99 plan to work? Thanks!

I have had this problem in the past and was able to resolve it fairly simple.
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will erase your current network configuration.
Reboot the phone..set up the APN again (wap.voicestream.com) and open up Safari.
If it doesn’t work, reboot the phone one more time and launch Safari.

Thanks for your quick reply. However, I’ve tried this twice, and restarted multiple times, and it wouldn’t work. It still said I needed to upgrade my plan. However, with a little research, I found a suggestion online that recommended I try internet2.voicestream.com for the APN, and it works. It’s slow, but it works. Do you know anything about any of this and the differences?

Gone are the bad old days, now it’s so easy to unlock an iPhone
I needed to keep my existing network provider when I bought my brand spanking new iPhone 3Gs. So I went looking for unlock solutions. After going through different website for what seemed hours a friend of mine suggested the website http://www.unlockanyiphone.co.uk. I was so pleased he had as I have never looked back. Someone even talked me through the process of unlocking my iPhone over the telephone after I had a problem doing this myself.
I’m over the moon, I can now also use my iPhone 3Gs with all the freely available apps that are not listed on Apple’s website.

Im just wondering if this hack will work for a prepaid tmobile plan: pay-as-you-go plan. I have limited sites( espn, abc, cnn), but i know there is way to hack it so that you can have unlimited sites. ANyone know?

In my opinion it is absolutely worth it. I love my iPhone, it’s like having a laptop inside your pocket. As a matter of fact, I use it more than I use my laptop. You should definitely get one, you won’t regret it!
I have unlocked iPhone and T-Mobile working great. I started with the $5.99 Tzones plan with the Tzone hack from Cydia. It worked but it was REALLLLLLYYYY SLOOWWW when it worked and sometimes it just plain didn’t work at all depending on my location.
Today I called and upgraded my plan to the $19.99 plan to see if there is any speed or more coverage improvements. I did this about 5 hours ago.
My question is: Does anyone know or can confirm that the $19.99 plan actually gives us better/faster service than the $5.99 plan? Or are they exactly the same? I would like to hear from people who have tried both, or just plain know because they either work for T-Mobile or are experts at this type of stuff.

EDGE connection is very slow, you’ll be lucky to get a 56K connection. My speed varies from location to location…although lately I have noticed that my average speed is above 56K.
I’m pretty sure the $19.99 plan is just as slow, because it’s also running on the same EDGE network.

I am going to write in here it might be something with the space of the blog, anyway, I got the Pnwag tool and ready to do the upgrade it doesnt let me. If I am on expert, i try to do the installer and the cindya, then take me to other screen where i jsut click on, show me the content, of the two packages I choose, next to the logo with the pineaple and the cartoon of the guy, then takes me back to the applications where i can see text, installer, cindya, etc.

So I unlocked jail… with the IZphone or something like that, that has El Zorro and his blade as an icon.
I want to be able to use this hack to use it with tzones, but I dont know how to get to those list, directory and all that complex codes that you talk about in the forum, tell me what software do I need in order to access and copy, paste, etc all this files.

I would recommend to just upgrade your firmware to 2.0 or above. The upgrade is fairly easy using PWNAGE ( http://wikee.iphwn.org/ ) Once upgraded, you just use Cydia to install the T Zones hack. very easy to do!

And second, I donwload the PWNAG tool, I unzip the quickpwang file but then when I want to run the other ones with tar extensions it or the others with .exe doesnt let me, its say is not executable, I have a Mac and not a PC let me know is this is the right version or not.
Cydia is there, i click on the application but just flash once and nothing happen.

When you do the upgrade, it will automatically install Cydia on your iPhone. Once you have Cydia, launch it, click on Sections – Tweaks and look for T Zones hack.

You can access the App Store with EDGE but not the iTunes Store.

I’m on a T-Mobile family plan and currently don’t own an iPhone. However, I was considering buying one, after i made sure that i can keep T-Mobile and still use all of the iPhones internet features. This plan sounds great, but I’ve never done any type of hacking and really don’t want to spend all that money on an iPhone and then screw it up. Can hacking severely harm my phone if i mess up, or is it not as complicated as it seems?

Please use the following sequence to restore the iphone when nothing works:
DFU Restore Mode:
1. Boot phone 2. Hold Power + Home until the screen goes BLACK 3. Continue to hold home and let go of power 4. Plug into iTunes (screen should still be BLACK) 5. Within 20 seconds it should come up in recovery mode 6. Let go of Home and hit RESTORE in iTunes.
Firmware 2.0 DFU: 1. Power phone OFF. 2. Hold power + home for 10 seconds. 3. Let go of power and continue to hold home until iTunes finds the phone.
I tried to make my iPhone work on t-mobile network, and i really messed it up. I had cyntia installed and edge still did not work, so I said I give it a try with ibrickr. done that, and it asked me to downgrade it, which I accepted, and asked to be done. Once the phone restarted, it keeps on showing code on the screen, then restarting again, then again code, and that’s about it. Any help with this would be appreciated.

I managed to restore it, and I am now unlocking it, BUT I LOST the data from it, so if anyone else tries it, please backup all your files.
I keep on receiving an internal error. I am able to access yahoo.com but nothing else. HELP!!!

Use the cydia installer to install the T-Mobile Web Fix and then wait a few hours, or attempt to hack your phone through ssh, T-Mobile Web will not work by itself without making a few modifications.

Go into Cydia, click on Sections at the bottom, scroll down until you see tweaks, the look for the T Zones Hack, Just install that and it should allow you to use EDGE on your iPhone.
The T-Mobile egde works, its a bit slow, and you get a bunch of error screens, but it is good enough to check your e-mail, surf and use Maps.

Yes you can use the $5.99 plan although I think T Mobile no longer offers that. I believe they have changed it to the $9.99 plan, this will work with the iPhone as well.

Fav 5′s are handled on the t-mobile side, not by your phone, but you will not have a nice looking display, like on a real t-mobile phone with the 5 pictures in a circle, but you just add them as favorites. And weird fact, you can change your fav 5′s in the middle of the month, if you have been calling someone way too much.
Will i still have my top 5 contacts woriking when i put my sim card in my iphone or what. and will everything on my iphone keep working the way it did.
Here is the current information on the iPhone 3G, it can be jail broken, the base band can be downgraded[Possible], but no unlock solution has been released.
If you are planning to unlock the iPhone 3G(Future) so it can be used on non-at&t networks then the only new features to work will be GPS, the 3G hardware will not work with T-Mobile 3G.
There is no unlock currently available for the iPhone 3G, and you must buy a contract with AT&T to get one, I would recommend purchasing an older iPhone, which can be unlocked & jail broken and you can use t-mobile’s edge, or wifi for internet access.

Don’t buy a 3G iPhone, they actually cost more with the service plan, 200 off is a scam, and 3G isn’t in all areas yet, which is ok for me because I have WiFi access everywhere and Edge for on the go. Just buy a old iPhone off Craigslist or E-Bay, you can find a deal, just search around and watch out for scammers.

Okay, to answer some questions. If you already have the $19.99 plan with T-Mobile all you need to do is change the settings to internet2.voicestream.com.
This WILL work with 1.1.4v firmware.
And, to clarify this is NOT 3G speed, even with the hack, 3G is third-gen, only available on AT&T. This is similar to the AT&T EDGE speed, but 3G is about 1.5-2 times as fast (only on AT&T though, T-Mobile doesn’t have a 3G network).
Can it work on firmware 1.1.4? How to check firmware though? If we use this hack then the phone will disable the Wifi right? Can we switch back and forth

The Faves should work, they are handled on the T-Mobile side, not your phone.
Okay, so I’ve been trying to do my research and it looks like any 1st or 2nd gen IPhone can be unlocked, including those updated to 2.0 firmware (as of a few weeks ago). Well, first I tried to use the old method, describe above, but modifying the files manually, since the preferences.plist file is not the same. I had to install OpenSSH from cydia and I installed the terminal emulator so that I can run ifconfig & ping. The preference file is located in a Preferences folder not contained in the root folder, look around you will eventually find it. I learned that for t-mobile you do not need a username/password, leave those fields blank. For a while Edge would not work, but I had an IP, but after I Installed the T-Mobile Edge fix from Cydia everything started to work, but I don’t know if it really did anything, it seems that edge takes a really long tiime to start up for the first time.

A update, I installed the T-Mobile Edge Fix from Cydia and made sure that I did not have a user name/password in my edge settings and…
By using the terminal emulator I was able to verify that having a user name/password would result in not getting a iP address.
But after fighting with the phone for a while I was able to get T-Mobile Edge to work on a 2G phone running iPhone OS 2.0.
The iPhone 2.0 Os has been jailbroken and the current instructions don’t seem to work. The file locations have changed once again and the contents is not the same.

Yes you can use the phone strictly for internet purposes i.e. Wi-Fi although that would beat the whole purpose of getting a cool phone like an iPhone.
You do have to have it jailbroken not unlocked if you’re not concerned about using its phone features.
So is it possible to use the iphone (or iphone 3G once it get’s unlocked) internet functions using wifi ONLY and not use/pay for EDGE or 3G? Would the weather and stuff still update when wifi is available? If that’s possible would I be able to do it on both At&T and Tmoblie?

I wouldn’t trust anything T Mobile tells you, of course they would want you to buy the more expensive plan. You do not have to have the $19.99 plan, I believe they have changed the $5.99 T Zones plan to $9.99. I’m still using the $5.99 T Zones plan and I haven’t had any issues with it, as a matter of fact it works perfectly fine using wap.voicestream.com. So my advice is go with the $9.99 plan and save you some hard earned money!
Newbie iphone user here… I just jailbreaked my iphone (Version 1.1.4) last night using Ziphone and I just put my T-mobile sim card into iphone and everything has been working just fine (phone, internet via wifi at home, etc) but I was unable to get internet access away from my wifi… So I started diggin online and found this site and following the advice here, I called T-mobile and asked for the T-Zone $5.99 online feature and T-mobile said I actually need the full internet access package $19.95 per month and had me type in internet2.voicestream.com under the edge page and everything is working fine. My question is that if I skip the $19.99 extra full internet access from T-mobile and just go with what Joe said (a few post above) and used the wap.voicestream.com under the edge page, would that work? It would be nice if I didn’t have to pay the extra $19.99 per month.

All you have to do is call tmobile with version 1.1.4 and tell them you need to get the data plan that supports the iphone problem solved..for youtube there is a download on installer and everything should work fine. it did for me..

Hi, read this whole blog…and thanks for all the hard work from everyone. I have a 1.1.4 that someone else unlocked. I used the wap.voicestream.com under the edge page and it worked in everything. I did nothing elase but type this in. Mail seems a bit inconsistent with sending, but you tube worked great, so did safari. I have the $20 plan. I tried internet2.voicestream.com and it did not work. I see here that others got that to work. is there a difference in speed?
Just got off the phone with T-mobile, in order for edge to work, in my case, i had to go to settings-general-network-edge and type in lowercase letters internet2.voicestream.com and it worked!
Not sure about youtube though, thats a whole other story! Hope this helped.

@Tony: Hey, the iPhone works great with MyFav from T-Mobile. The only think is you don’t get the MyFav rotator, like you said. But I did just the same as you suggested: added the 5 to my favorites list, and done. T-Mobile doesn’t bill me for talking to them (since you register their phone number with T-Mobile [you can do this on the website], so it doesn’t depend on the MyFav app on the phone).

MY FAVs is part of a Tmobile calling plan that allows you to call any 5 people on any service or land line with unlimited minutes. It works great for me because right now I’m not the riches person around. So something like having unlimited minutes for very cheap is cool. I figured that if it was part of my plan and did acquire an IPhone that I would be able to use it. The only thing that made me question it was that new Tmoblie phones have MY FAVs option on it. Like its programmed to the phone. Every month it resets itself, allowing me to change my 5 Favs if i want. Maybe by putting my favs on the “favorites” on the Iphone it may act as the same. I really want an Iphone because Tmobile does not have a phone that catches my interest like the Iphone does, also I really like Mac products. Anyway any thoughts would be appreciated. What is the My Favs thing? I have seen it but don’t know what it is. I know that it is something about calling any 5 people. The iPhone doesn’t have a setting for that – there is a ‘favorites’ for your contacts. Check your online access to T-mobile to see if My Favs is there and setup – if you can take care of it there, then you don’t have to worry about the iPhone having it, because it will be with your account anyway.
I have Tmobile and really want an Iphone. Ive read on here that EDGE can be loaded on the iphone, but have not read if MY Favs can be used on it. I really like the MY FAVS option. If MY FAVS is possible on the Iphone i will get one fo sure.

You can try this:
Connect your iphone to you computer with itune on. Try pressing and holding the Home button for 6 seconds to close a frozen application. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red “power off” slider may appear, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears. Then your itune will find your iPhone, restore it and unlock your iPhone again.
I followed the intruccion and the iphone doesn’t work. The iphone is rebooting continuesly for 3 days. I turned it off holding the two buttons, affter that I turn it on and then it shows the apple logo for 3 seconds follow the several code lines from the botton to the top of the screen for 6 seconds more and then it repeats the accion again and again. I’ve had similar problems as ‘kitman’ above. iBirckr just froze my iPhone. I had to click ‘restore’ in iTunes to get the original system back from Apple. But it over-wrote my ziphone system files and the phone wont accept my t-mobil sim anymore. So I had to re-run ziphone. But I lost all my original pics, songs, movies and contacts lost! Its a disaster! I wont bother with this software anymore. If the phone stopped working then I am stuffed as I have no official software for it.
If you signed for $19.99 plan, go ahead and leave APN settings BLANK (delete everything inder APN setings)… Will work just fine. No iTune Store and limited YouTube function.
JB, I got it working using the $19.99 plan, however I cant get the $5.99 plan to work. With the $19.99 plan all I did was change the APN settings. my youtube search feature will not work on edge. works great on wifi though… only thing i can do with youtube on edge is watch featured and bookmarked videos. pretty much blows since its the only thing ive found not to work with the 5.99 plan so far.
The method works. Everything works fine with this hack including mail, weather,stocks etc,. The only problem is with youtube. I am able to watch the videos stored in my bookmarks. But I am unable to search for videos. The error message reads” You tube not availlable.”

I was using ibrickr to hack the phone but it froze. So I did a restart on the phone but after turning it back on, the screen is just scrolling with codes. Ibrickr and iTune will not recognize the iphone and i did a hard restart but it’s the same. lots of code scrolling from top to bottom. did i screw up the iphone and it’s there a way to fix it.
i did the hack on firmware 1.1.4 and it worked perfectly although it didnt let me install the pxl files but the hack still worked nonetheless

Hi, I just bought an unlocked Iphone and was wondering if I should get the t-zone for $5.99 or the $19.99 service.
I am asking because in one of the comments above I see that with tzone you cannot do many things such as maps or go to online messengers, check stock quotes, or anything of that sort. Is that true? Does this stuff work on the $19.99 service?
If that is true, can someone please tell me where I can find information on how to get the $19.99 service installed and working on the iphone?

Hello, I have an iphone that has not been hacked using the firmware. I guess it was hacked with some installer program. Anyways, will this hack still work? Wouldn’t the manufacturers warranty be voided because we are hacking into the firmware?
Finally got it working!
To shed some lights for people who had trouble. Follow what Sacha said above. Also, if you don’t know how to have installer.app installed: Rerun ziphone 3.0, but choose “Jailbreak” option instead of “Do it all” option. This will install installer.app on your iphone. Hope it helps.

Ok, finally got installer.app on my iphone. But when I stated ibrickr and clicked “check my phone”, it gave me the message that the phone must be jailbroken and installer.app installed, both of which I have done. Can someone please help. Thank you.

Sorry for the comment-spam, but one more follow-up from me: It’s working now, as expected I just needed to wait a little bit until the T-Zones service activation went through.
Since there are different comments on different firmware version and successes with them, here a quick summary of what I did:
1. Bought new iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware.
2. Jailbreak and SIM Unlock with ziPhone 2.5.
3. Found this great post, read everything including comments.
4. Called up T-Mobile to have $5.99 t-zones service added to my account.
5. Used Installer app that came with ziPhone and installed T-Mobile 1.1.3 TZones Hack from the Tweaks 1.1.3 folder. There is no updated hack for 1.1.4 since it works fine with the 1.1.3 one.
6. Waited for an hour until service activation went through.
7. Done! I did not change any additional settings, the APN was automatically set by the TZones Hack, I did not put in a username or password.
Hope that helps anyone who is still trying to figure it out!
Okay I called and they still had the $5.99 even though it was not offered on the website. It might not be available for everybody as they somehow seem to offer certain services only in certain states/zip codes etc.
I added it now and applied the 1.1.3 Boss Tweak, which took care of all the settings, rebooted the phone, but it’s not working right now (getting some access error in Safari). However the guy said it takes between 2 and 48 hours to activate, so I’ll give it a day and then report back.
To my understanding and according to some of my readers, the $4.99 plan is no longer available. Yeah call them and find out for sure and let me know.
It’s weird, I just checked my available T-Mobile services and found this little text block: “Unlimited t-zones for $4.99 includes unlimited Internet e-mail and Mobile Web content. Unlimited t-zones Pro for $9.99 includes unlimited access to corporate e-mail, Internet e-mail, and Mobile Web content–all right from your phone, any time, anywhere!”
The weird thing is that I can only select T-Zones Pro, there is no option to just get T-Zones, even though they talk about it and say it’s $4.99. I guess I’ll have to call them up and see what I can do.

I just succcessfuly installed the T-Moble TZones Hack on my unlocked 1.1.4 iphone. Here is what I did:
Go to the installer aplication on your phone and select “sources”. Go into “BigBoss’s Apps”, select “install”. Select the “Tweaks” folder, select “T-Mobile TZones Hack” and select install. Exit the installer application. Go into “settings” application, select “general” , select “edge” and then next to APN type in “wap.voicestream.com”. No username or password is neccessary. Reboot your phone and you should be connected.

Everything worked on my Iphone – EDGE, WIFI ETC…, but in the last few days, When I’m not in a WIFI zone, and it switches to EDGE, incoming calls seem to be going straight to voicemail. Does anyone know why or what I can do??

Other non http stuff probably won’t work because unless you pay for the $20 data plan, most ports that other things use are blocked.
the $20 plan requiers no file mods, just internet2.voicestream.com as the APN …. and nothing else… no blocked ports so everything else works as advertised … it’s the same as the $20 iphone data package on AT&T and such
If you only use web, mail, etc then you don’t worry about it

The best thing I’ve found for getting turning on edge and paying only $5.99 vs. $19.99 is the BigBoss hack. Install it, add the $5.99 t-zones plan, wait about 30 minutes and you’re good to go.

4. Now grab your iPhone and tap Settings – General – Network – EDGE.
• The APN you will use is wap.voicestream.com, username and password will be guest.
• Reboot your iPhone and voila…you should be able to browse online using EDGE.
Hello! I used the iBrickr and it actually messed up my phone that was unable to restore even with iTunes. Then I reflashed the whole phone with ZiPhone 2.5c, but I’ve unlocked, jailbreaked, and activated the phone with iPlus 2.0! After I did that everything was back in order. The only thing is missing on my phone is Springboard or Launcher, or something that can change home screen. My installer program missing (because I am stupid enough to load crap instaed of Springboard right a way)…

Are you sure you are able to go online using EDGE and not WiFi? If your EDGE is working then you don’t need to apply this hack.
I just purchased a 1.1.4 firmware iphone and unlocked it using ziphone 2.5. To acess t-mobile edge all I did was go to settings> general>network and under edge where its says APN I just typed in wap.voicestream.com and under username and password I just typed in guest, and now my phone works perfectly (weather, maps, safari, youtube) using edge. Do I need to do the whole ibrickr deal or just leave it the way it its?

i have a 1.1.2 otb iphone with turbosim and i tried this and it worked. at first it just screwed up my wifi and stuff but i messed around with the phone network settings and stuff and got wifi working. a week later i was playing with it in class and all of a sudden the weather updated. the t zone hack works most of the time but for the times it doesnt you just have to keep turning off and turning on your phone till it works.
Worked great, put in a diff. carriers chip from my Tmobile to see if it would work. Did not and reset my edge back to cingular wap. Followed your guide and was back to tmobile edge.

i have the appinstaller on my iphone and one of the things you can install is the t-mobile edge software (5.99) but it says warning, this application will delete your system prefs. What does that mean and how will it effect my iphone? Is there a way to fix that?
OK i was able to find another site that explained how to get itunes to locate my phone. So i was able to restory everythiing after a fw minutes of panic! my question is now, i have tmobile and would like to use the edge. I have a data plan, but i am lil scared to attempt this again. any idea as to what may have gone wrong? I did have my tmobile sims card in the whole time, should i not have?

I fellowed everything step by step. I down loaded the iBrickr… and did somethign with the firmware.. then it was downloading files to my phone. it said it would take 3-4 minutes but not to take longer then 10. If it was more then 10 to shut phone off restart and use itunes to restore the phone… well it took longer then 10 minutes i did what it said…. but its stuck.. it just keeps restarting on its own.. starts loading some files.. and stop and restarts… it wont stop doing that… just bought the phone..can anyone help?
props to Jon B for getting this hack done. I used to have a similar 5.99 hack for my t-mobile dash aka HTC excalibur. I have a question, will the speed of internet, youtube, streaming etc be as fast as the iphone’s natural AT&T/Cingular data plan? Last time I checked, it had a moderate speed and i could get thru things sooo easily. SO if if some could easily answer my question. PLease email me the answer. ok, i was able to do it. I have another issue, when i downloaded the preferences.plist file it displayed preferences only, so i renamed it to preferences.plist, i uploaded it and it didn’t replace the existing preferences.plist file, instead a new file appeared “preferences.plist.plist” this i when i realized i made a mistake of renaming it when i saw your update. Anyways my question is how can i erase this file that appeared in Ibrickr, when i click on it it doesn’t give me the option to delete it. What can i do? Is there a way to restore everything to factory settings and start over? And if i do this will it relock my iphone? I assume i would be able to unlock it again with ziphone right?

You do not need to jailbreak again. All you’re using iBrickr for is to browse into the iPhone’s system file. You can also try using Winscp as an alternative.

First, i bought and iphone 1.1.3 OTB and i succesfully unlocked it using ziphone V2.5. My concern is that when i download iBrickr it will ask me to jailbreak my iphone, but i already did this when i unlocked the phone i also did the jailbreak. Still the program will ask me to jailbreak it. I wanted to know if i do this jailbreak again won’t that mess up the phone given that i had already jailbreak it with Ziphone. ok I have tried everything i just keep getting the 502 error even though I can still get my email from yahoo. I can not get anything on Safari. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong I have done everything above more them twice. The first time that I downloaded the hack on a jailbroken 1.1.1 it worked great but now that i have to jailbroken 1.1.3 (updated using Ziphone originally 1.1.1 and 1.1.2) it doesn’t want to work at all… and one of the phones the email doesn’t want to work even if I set it up using WiFi it tells me the user name or password for “imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com” is incorrect i know that i have put in my info correctly. ok, so say I’m at home where I have wifi. Does the iPhone set a precedence on wifi over edge when an open unsecured network is present? Or am going to have to turn of my edge in order for the wifi to activate. If someone could comment on exactly how that works, I would be very happy. Gitamba – what do you mean? If you have the T-zones hack, if you can get email, then you should be able to also use Safari on the iPhone. Do you have the $5.99 plan option subscribed to? After you do that, give it a bit of time, maybe an hour, to kick in. I haven’t had a problem since the 11th when I first posted.
I have a 1.1.3 phone the only problem is i’m running xp and don’t know of anysoftware to perform the software change to safari to get it to use the internet.
The E icon basically means that you have EDGE capabilities but it will not work if you don’t have the $5.99 plan or the $19.99 plan. Just follow the hack and call TMobile and let them know you want the $5.99 T Zones plan.
I am not paying $5.99 or any extra service for my iphone but it has an ‘E’ on the status bar at the top. Does it mean my iphone is capable of connecting to EDGE following the instruction above.
FYI: I inserted my sim card into 2 Blackberry pearls and both showed “EDGE” (capital letters) while my wife sim card showed “edge” (lower-case) on both phone. Can some one please give me an answer/explaination.

I’d suggest that you just add the proxy info as mentioned in Richard’s 12/31 post. I’ve got full EDGE networking on my phone including YouTube.

NO!! you can’t unlock or jailbreak a 1.1.3 OTB (thats a fact). if you live in the States get ATT….unlocking is for people in countries where there’s no ATT. Plus T-mobile is a POS carrier.
On the other hand, you could get a 1.1.1 OTB and soft-upgrade to 1.1.3.

Anyway, mail, safari, stocks, weather and google maps work perfectly. But I have an application called SyncJe, and works perfectly on WiFi but hangs when using the EDGE network. Is it because I have to change some preference (ssh) inside the app list?? Should it work fine? Whats your thoughts?

While mail and Safari seam to work quite well. . . . Weather, Stocks and Maps work irregularly. When updating weather it will more often than not ‘stall’ when updating. BUT I can go to Safari and load a web page just fine. Is there a better hack? Is this just the way it is?

I have an iPhone and use it with my t-mobile AND i have the data package (Edge) that I use no matter where I am as long as I have service.. you just have to go to settings, edge, and type internet2.voicestream.com and leave username and password blank, then you call t-mobile..tell them you want the data package (unlimited internet for 19.95) and your AAALLLL set!!! works like a charm!

You are correct this $5.99 plan gives you unlimited internet access using the EDGE network. I’ve been using it for close to 8 months now and I haven’t had any problems with it other than the network being extremely slow.
I have no clue if you can use that connection as a modem.
I thought that the 5.99 plan just gives you access to T-Zones only. Any real web browsing, email etc, requires an Unlimited Data plan. If you have a BlackBerry (that’s what I’m using right now) 19.99 gets you unlimited internet and hot spot. Text messaging is a separate option. The SideKick ‘s plan is also handset specific and gets you the same deal. Other phones pay a larger amount and you now must buy the Unlimited plan bundled with the HotSpot service.
Jon B, are you saying that you can use T-Zones the same way as the data plan? One thing that I have used the data plan to do was to allow my Motorola to act as a wireless bt modem for my MacBook. Do you think that the 5.99 plan would let you do the same thing?

The preferences.plist file is specific to every phone and must be edited individually. The file that you provide might still work but it might mess up other stuff.
My question is whether all of you are using already activated iphones, or whether you are able to purchase the iphone at att, and unlocking it w/out having to activate it with an att plan (for two friggin years) first. Thanks!

The $5.99 plan gives you unlimited internet access. I’ve had mine close to 6 months now and have only been paying $5.99 a month despite of how much data I download from my iPhone.

Well guys just to let know that if you already have an unlocked iphone, you dont need to install these two apps. All you will need is to do is go settings>general>network>edge> change APN to wap.voicestream.com and leave the username and password blank.
Try this site: http://absoluteinsight.net/forum/post-65503.html I followed this site’s instruction and got my T-mobile EDGE and wifi working perfectly. No need for Service, etc. I recommend installing BSD SubSystem and OpenSSH using the installer program. Then follow the instruction on the site. I would recommend SSHing into the iPhone because you have a better control of the phone.

P.S. I don’t know how using different people’s preferences.plist file will change your iPhone so it’s best to modify rather than override. Just make sure you make a copy of it first before modifying or deleting the preferences.plist file

After trying this, I lost my Wi-Fi like some others above. I’m using a 1.1.2 OOB with the newest baseband.
After adding the proxy file, and the new preferences.plist, I rebooted and EDGE worked great…but my WiFi wouldn’t get an IP address. Fortunately for me, I’d renamed my original preferences.plist and installed Finder earlier, so I swapped the preferenses back and rebooted.
After looking at the original and hacked preferences.plist files, I saw mine was very different from the files posted here, not just in file length but in the GUID keys embeded in the file. Not sure if this is the issue or not, so I started examning the files and tried to see what actually needs to be different.
I found this section that I think was added to make edge work:

I went back to my original preferences.plist, and added it above this section:

Note: the only reason I had a bit with wap.voicestream.com in it is because after restoring my original preferences.plist, I went back to Settings > General > Network > EDGE and tried entering the info again, to see if it would work. It didn’t, but modifying the preferences in this way did.

The iPhone is a cell phone so yes you will be able to make calls with this. When you buy the phone at the Apple store, more than likely it will be version 1.1.2. in which case you will need to downgrade to 1.1.1.

YouTube does not work over the EDGE network regardless of what you had on your previous cell phone. At this time I don’t know of any hack to make it work, although that sounds like a great project for 2008!

answer for mango. try this. go to edge and make sure is empty on the apn username and password. once you do that save it by restating and you should be good.
jon. i followed every process and still fail. question . one ibreaker proxy.pac. does should come out on i breaker as is or is ok if it comes out proxy.pac.txt. if not help me out how to save it.

Hi, I’ve got 1.1.1 unlocked by Independence and AnySim, I use CyberDuck for uploading files. I’ve done everything as You said (five times). I have 19.99 plan and wheather I use internet2.voicestream.com or wap.voicestream.com with or without username, Mail is working but only for text emails, anything bigger with pict etc. opens for very short moment and than it pops out to main springboard screen. Stocks, Weather and Safari does the same thing, I can see weather for one second and it pops out. I’m confused! Any Ideas??

If you go to the Apple store they will sell you a locked iPhone. No you don’t have to have a contract. Just go to the Apple store and buy the iPhone no questions asked. If you need help unlocking it just send me an email via the contact form from this blog. Good luck.

All the iPhones feature will work except for YouTube, I believe it has something to do with YouTube using a different port to stream videos. No T Mobile will not get bitchy because the EDGE speed that they provide is very slow, slower than dial up!
Oh yeah T Mobile knows if you are using an iPhone on their network, I believe the iPhone has some kind of signature that T Mobile can track on their network. A month ago I went to a T Mobile store to renew my contract, and the rep was like..”Oh so you have the iPhone huh? How do you like it?” I was like, how did you know? And she told me that they can see it in their system somehow.
To those that want to buy the internet plan: T Mobile will try to sell you the total internet plan which costs about $19.99, don’t go for it. Get the $5.99 T Zones plan instead, it works perfectly for me and for some readers that followed this hack.
What i’m curious about is if all features such as email, youtube, etc will work with this. Also, wont T-Mobile get bitchy if all of the sudden, you’re downloading mbs apon mbs of data? I have the 5.99 plan on my current phone and since i’ve had the phone (About two years) i’ve only used 50mbs will semi regular use of it.
Also, do you know if taking your phone to a T-Mobile store will cause the reps there to have a heartattack and die when you tell them how you have your plan setup? =P

Please please help, I’ve been trying different options for months now.
I have a 1.1.2 OTB, did the activation bypass, then did jailbreak. downgraded to 1.1.1, then upgraded back to 1.1.2 and did jailbreak. Used StealthSIM and its unlocked on Tmobile. I followed the instructions exactly as listed in the beginning of this article for the proxy.pac and the preferences.plist then used WinSCP to transfer the files over (instead of iBrickr). Added the tmobile web to my account (I just said I am switching to a motorola razr and would like to access some email on my phone). Everything works perfectly, full edge access and no wifi interference. All my settings on my iPhone are default settings. Edge speeds are horrific though, but that is as expected it wasn’t any better when using AT&T’s network.
so i have tried this and at times my tmobile internet works off and on. At times i get the 502 error or what not and at times i don’t. i don’t know what the problem is. I am using the total internet with 1.1.1
TO CLARIFY:
Actually im not in Houston. Also, it seems that if you had an iphone with 1.1.1 or eralier, you can upgrade to 1.1.2 in a special way that everything works fine. The only problem that I talked about relates to those who bought an iphone with 1.1.2 already installed. So look it up on how to upgrade if you have an older phone, youll be Ok as long as you follow instructions.
AND PLEASE, IF ANYONE FINDS THE SOLUTION TO GET EDGE ON 1.1.2 WITH OTB IPHONES PLEASE POST IT. (AND WIFI WORKING AS WELL)

WARNING TO OTB 1.1.2 DONT TRY THIS METHOD
Hey, just wanted to warn people with 1.1.2 out of the box, maybe its only me but I saw someone else post the same problem, MANGO posted the same. I had a 1.1.1 iphone and sold it, now I have a turbosim and a 1.1.2 and tried this method (it worked before with the old bootloader) but now with the new bootloader after I do this, WIFI gets messed up, therefore I need to undo what I did to get things back to work. So if you have this problem you can either replace the files again somehow without wifi which I dont know how to do, maybe by email or something, if not, what I did worked which is restore back to 1.1.1 and then 1.1.2 as stated by several guides out there on how to unlock a 1.1.2 OTB.

Where it says in the code MYIPADRESS, should i look up my ip address and put it in there? All my problems are in the proxy.pac I have it named correctly, but am not sure of the numbers used. Should I replace all the numbers with numbers pertaining to my iphone specifically?

OK for those of you are wondering if this hack works on firmware 1.1.1, the answer is yes it does. I finally updated my firmware and EDGE works flawlessly. I have both the 4GB and 8GB updated to 1.1.1 and so far everything is working as it should.

That is incorrect, you can use any outgoing mail server you like. How are you setting up the email, IMAP or POP3? The AT&T outgoing mail server is only used when you set up YMail, but it is configured automatically for you. I’m running GMail’s IMAP server and it works wonderfully.
Have Edge working fine on T-Mobile but can’t get mail to work. Says it can’t connect to incoming or outgoing server, even though my IT dept says all of the settings are fine. Any thoughts? Also, I read in one case where ATT’s outgoing server info had to be used, could this be the case for T-Mobile & if so, what is their outgoing server??
I did as instructed but do not work even with the correct extension file. I tried to delete the preferences.plist file but the ibrickr do not give me that option. is there another way to do it?

My suggestion is to restore your iPhone via iTunes. Once you have it restored, install your 3rd party apps first and then perform the hack given here. I had that same problem and restoring the iPhone should fix the issue.

Dane, I’ve only tried this on 1.0.2 so I can’t confirm if this will work on 1.1.1 If you’ve tried it and it doesn’t work, then there’s a good chance this wasn’t mean to work on 1.1.1, but then again that’s just an assumption.

Guys, when you’re saving your proxy.pac files, follow these instructions.
File > “Save As”
Change “Save as Type” to ALL FILES.
Input proxy.pac as file name.
Does this hack enable edge to be used on networks around the world or is it just for T-mobile in the states. Im having hassle enabling Edge for use on Vodafone’s GPRS network in Ireland

I was having a ton of issues with this last night. To fix it, I verified my sister’s account (I was setting up the edge settings on her phone), and she had a SIDEKICK plan in ADDITION to the tzones. Now, I don’t know if this directly conflicts, but I had her remove the sidekick plan and have just the t-zones. A few mins later, I changed the settings back to wap.voicestream.com user/pass guest/guest and then i went to Safari and HELD THE HOME BUTTON DOWN to force-restart the app. It worked beautifully! Everything works, except YouTube, (even AFTER I downloaded the YouTUBE fix from the i.unlock.no community sources list… hmmm any thoughts?)

Yeah me too , i jsut checked my proxy .pac and at the end of the file said .txt ( i was using ibrickr ) how do i fix the .txt part? how can i take it off. Maybe this is the part stopping me from the internect to work

The Total Internet Package went down in price to $19.99 from $29.99 (includes Unlimited data using EDGE and T-Mo’s HotSpot Wi-Fi service).
WAP should be the original GPRS speeds–roughly dial-up, whereas EDGE (GPRS 2.5G/3G) is around 115kbps or more (supposedly).
Has anyone used the “Total Internet Package” from T-Mobile with the iPhone yet. Is there any difference in speeds between it and EDGE? I was thinking about just getting it if the speeds were greater and using it from home as well.

A couple comments:
1) I didn’t modify any files and upload them to my iPhone
2) I called T-Mobile and was honest with them. They insisted I needed the internet plan (/shrug)
3) I think they provision EDGE almost instantly, so I’ve gone in and tried the following:
- Modified EDGE setting with internet2.voicestream.com (blank/blank)
- Modified EDGE setting with wap.voicestream.com (guest/guest)
The last setting is working.
Couple questions:
1) anyone know whether internet2.voicestream.com SHOULD work?
2) thoughts on why/how this works without changing the 2 files listed above?
i using v. 1.1.1 and for some reason i cant delete the preferences.plist. When i upload the new preferences.plist file it doesnt show the replace message. please help

When I have the pic up and click on send as e-mail it says “please set up a Mail account in order to email photos” I use hotmail for my personal e-mail and I have the $19.99 T-Mobile internet plan. Error 502 means you don’t have any internet connection. Browse into the iPhone and make sure the files you uploaded have the correct file extensions. You should have proxy.pac and preferences.plist. Double check the EDGE settings and make sure it’s still enabled, you should see wap.voicestream.com with a username and password of Guest.
and also, when i send ring tones to my phone i cant see them in the sound settings, is there anything i have to do for that

i just got a plan with tmobile and activated my iphone today, i did the appsnapp unlock w/ jailbreak and anysim. im using the 19.99 internet because thats all i knew of, its slower than wi-fi, but if i can get a cheaper one at same speed ill do that. i didnt need to hack or anything, all i did was:
settings>general>network>edge, then
APN: internet2.voicestream.com user/pass: guest
rebooted, and it worked. no need for hack crap.
but my iphone is brand new, so who knows.

Yesterday, I opted $5.99 T-MobileWeb with my regular plan from t-mobile website (no need to call them) ..and today I got SMS confirmation for activation. After uploading those two files and setting Edge setting, it didn’t worked first time. So I remove and re-uploaded both files, reenter those EDGE settings and after rebooting my iPhone..its just working perfectly. Speed is reasonably good..not that fast to watch YouTube video..but its serves my purpose..

ok i tried this edge hack and i have the tzones currently on my iphone but when i go on safari it just sits there and loads, i think it may be the reason to when i uploaded the proxypac file when i uploaded it, it kept on having the “txt” after it….. does that affect anything??

I just updated to 1.1.1 and signed up the T-zone yesterday.
Except the speed is extremly slow (60kb maximum), i found i couldn’t access to http://iphone.beejive.com. It says ” Tunnel or SSL Forbidden (Description:8189 is not an allowed port for Tunnel or SSL connections).
Meebo works Okay on Tzone. However, i like Jivetalk interface better.

My coworker just signed up the $20 dollar internet plan but his speed is as terrible as mine except that he could youtube search. Not sure if the whole HOUSTON, TX area is sufferring the same slow tmobile edge speed.
ok, well i called up t-mobile. they told me that there was a ‘glitch’ in the system which allowed customers to access EDGE via tzones via iphones accidentally. they also told me that the ‘glitch’ was fixed back in august 2007 (i bought my iphone two weeks ago and it was working with EDGE perfectly), so i dont know…. what im going now is re-hacking, or re-uploading all the files, and unsubscribing from t-zones then subscribing with t-zones again. hopefully itll refresh my ‘connection’ or something..
I would check to see if EDGE is still configured properly, go to Settings – General – Network – EDGE. Make sure you have wap.voicestream.com, sometimes it changes to cingular for some reason. If everything’s correct and it still doesn’t work, I would restore the iPhone to factory settings and try the hack once again.
hey guys. i recently used this hack two weeks ago. everything was fine, i probably transferred about 16MB of data thru t-mobile’s edge. then all of a sudden, it stops working. i get a message saying “could not activate EDGE” whenever i want to go on the internet/weather/etc. does anyone else have the same problem? do i have to upgrade to the $20/month plan?
I followed all the instructions..here is the problem.
when I go to the edge setting and input the wap server address and hit return…instead of taking me to the login field…screen turn black and goes back to the home screen where all the applications are listed. any ideas?

Interesting experience today at the TMO store. I had them pull up my account that I use for my iPhone, and… it already said with big letters on top of the screen: iPhone!
I asked them about it. The answer was, that they know this because of your device’s IMEI when it registers itself on the network (which is definitely feasible…)

well it took me a while to get it working. I had the “disabled” message in the APN name, the 502 erorr message, and basically everything. I was able to recieved messages but not send them. It was when I kept reading these posts over and over again I deleted the 2 files compltely (.pac, .plist) and then put them back on. I rebooted and went to EDGE settings, there was nothing in APN, Username, Password so I typed them in myself. Then went to yahoo.com (i had seen a post that said only yahoo worked so i tried to see if i had the same problem). It worked so I tried a few other sites and also stocks, mail, etc. and they also worked. The only problem is that on Youtube I can’t search or see the “most watched” sections. I get an error message.
I’m glad you got it working James! I’m not sure why everyone else is having issues trying to get this to work. I’ve done this on 6 different iPhones so far and they’ve worked perfectly.
I think the biggest issue is the file extension. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again…make sure you have the correct file extensions for the 2 files needed. The files has to say proxy.pac and preferences.plist, use microsoft notepad when creating these 2 files.
ok after deleting the .pac and .plist files and then putting them back on the phone I realized that Yahoo.com is working, nothing else. Then i checked stocks, maps, and weather and they too are working! Then I tried youtube and so it that!!! After all that I went back into safari and went to apple.com and that has loaded too! Matt, and anyone else who had problems do this: a) Make sure its “proxy.pac” (not .pac.txt) and same with “preferences.plist” (not .plist.txt)
b) Make sure it’s wap.voicestream.com username and password is “guest”
c) If still not working do this. Delete the proxy and preferences files. Re-download them to iphone. Then make sure the edge settings are as step b says, when it is the same DO NOT GO BACK INTO THE EDGE SETTINGS. Then go to safari and go to yahoo.com. Should work, then try the things I did after.

I also have that problem. I have tried everything but only Mail works with the T-Mobile EDGE. Safari, Stocks, Weather, etc. do not work on the EDGE configuration. Someone please help us!
Okay, so non of the stock or weather widgets work. Safari does not work, but Mail does work. What could be wrong?
Okay, I am pretty skilled with altering system files and I am not sure what is happening. I replaced the code and added the file. I get the “E” for edge to appear, but when it checks for data under stocks and weather and everything else, it just times out. It looks to be connecting though.

On my iPhone the EDGE speed is around 56K sometimes less, yeah it sucks but it’s better than not having internet connection at all.
Hey Lisa, don’t believe T Mobile, they told me the same thing. I don’t think they are lying, they just simply don’t know. I can browse any websites and send/receive email just fine with mine. Oh and you don’t need the $19.99 plan, the $5.99 works wonderfully!
I also called T-Mobile, added the $19.99 total internet plan, and everything was working when I woke up the next morning (except YouTube)! This is awesome!
I have a question tho…. When I called T-Mobile… they said the $5.99 will not work to access the WWW, just certain websites… Is this true? I read all the posts, but still am confused..

I’ve been able to send/receive email and also stream YouTube videos using this hack. The only thing I haven’t been able to use is the web based chat app called BeeJive.
I have a hack right now on a phone that allows me to use crickets wap proxy server. But when I am connected to their proxy server I cannot use other protocols that do not go through port 80 or 8080 such as you tube video streaming or pop email retrieval. I want to get an iphone, but is this the same situation, you cannot use pop or different protocols through the EDGE proxy server?
+ i just got the T-MobileWeb just maybe an hour before i started this hack. is there a waiting period before i am able to use tmoweb? i’d think not because i had my EDGE working for a bit, but it could be possible.
in my case, i did everything correctly as written. when i finished, it didn’t really work at first; until about a half hour later, the EDGE finally worked.
but.
after i put in new programs into my iPhone(v1.0.2) with Installer, when my iPhone rebooted, the EDGE stopped working. the APN was listed as “DISABLED”. i changed it back to wap.voicestream.com, but all i get out of EDGE now is a series of “internal error. You do not have access to the site in “(url)”

Your file extension is wrong, you should have proxy.pac and not proxy.pac.doc that will not work. Open up notepad and paste the code into notepad, now save the file as proxy.pac and upload it to your iPhone. Make sure you delete the file that you previously uploaded. Good luck!
I did everything that I was suppose to do but nothing work. I check the edge and everything was right. When I try to use the safari all it does was load. Nothing pops up just keep loading. I have the $5.99 tzone but I don’t know why it doesn’t work. The proxy says proxy.pac.doc instead of proxy.pac I don’t know if that changes anything. I used microsoft word so if this is a problem please show me how to fix it. Please help me out someone.

I was just having trouble with my Wifi… and after several days of trial and error….. I figured out an easy fix!!!
All I had to do was turn on… Ask To Join Networks.
Now everything works great (and I dont even need the Services program anymore).

If anyone is having trouble connecting to their WiFi….
MAKE SURE under settings that… “Ask to join networks” is ON!!!! (turning WiFi on alone is not enough)
It took me several days to figure this out. I had internet working, but my WiFi was not.
Now I figured out how to fix that problem and wanted to share it with everyone.
Just go to:
Settings> WiFi > Ask to join networks
Now, my iPhone works PERFECT.
I don’t even need “Services” anymore.

Andre et al—I called T-Mobile and switched from the Blackberry internet plan to the T-Mobile Total unlimited internet plan. Then changed the APN to internet2.voicestream.com –left the username/password blank and bang-o it ALL works–everything. Love this phone!

Ok Let me just say, if you follow these direction correctly
it would work perfectly. just one thing if you call t-mobile to add t-zone dont tell them you have a iphone they would say – t-mobile dont support the iphone so i told them i had a motorola v3x and they said they are going send a setup brower for it, it never show up HaHa. but the t-zone works great…P.S if i would you install the app Service.app because there is interference with EDGE and WIFI….

Ok i did everything twice and tried other websites but still no luck. on the weather or stocks page it just says updating the whole time, when i go through safari i get an error that allways reads something like, “internal error You do not have access to the site in…” I signed up for the 5.99 web through my carrier, and just wondering if anyone else knows what could cause these errors.

hi, does this hack work on another carrier/country? i have the APN user/pwd.
Chris, you should contact your operator again and tell them that you are using some other smartphone. i.e – Blackberry with Windows Mobile on it or whatever.
Then ask the APN and if user/password is required. Also make sure the “PROXY” is correct or not.
Your EDGE on iPhone depends on All these things.
Hi, I used another guide that basically did the same thing as this one, except the other guide left password and username blank for EDGE settings. My problem is this: I had it working beautifully for about 2 months. I was using the 5.99 tzones and then about 3 or 4 days ago EDGE disappears. No idea why. So tonight I called T-mobile just to double check that I had the tzones, the lady said yes and then I told her it wasn’t working and she said, “Oh, well do you have an iPhone?” And I immediately said “no” in fear of something going bad. So she said that could be the case. And I’ve done your guide to get it back working, I reset the network settings thinking that would work, but not a thing. So I just thought you should know.

Browse into /private/var/root and delete proxy.pac and re-upload it to that same directory.
Browse into /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and delete preferences.plist and re-upload preferences.plist to that directory.
Completely shut down the iPhone by holding down the power button for about 5 seconds and sliding the power off.
There are a number of things that can possibly be wrong, the most common is that you may have the wrong file extensions, you should have proxy.pac and preferences.plist
Also you have to purchase the $5.99 plan with T Mobile, this is not a free service. Double check the EDGE settings and make sure EDGE is not disabled.

It worked Great!! you may want to update the info, when you downloading the “preferences.plist” windows automaticly will change it and download it as “preferences.xml” make SURE that the extension is the right one…. .plist that it may cause your iphone not to go online.

Just FYI for people having trouble… where it says “download this file” you need to RIGHT click on it… then SAVE AS onto your computer, and then RENAME the file to.. preferences.plist (for some reason, it wants to save it as …. preferences.xml
Just rename that file… then copy it to your iPhone.
After follow the instructions, my iphone still got no access for internet (safari, youtube, weather, stock) even I have 5.99 plan T-zone.
I click them, waiting for updating so long (more than 10 minutes) then become an error message.
What should I do? Anybody can help?

I’m not entirely sure if this would work with the $19.99 plan. According to the Hackintosh forum, this particular hack was specifically for the $5.99 plan.
I get the black screen when i hit safari or maps or whatever. nothing works. sometimes it says something like I am not subscribed to edge. what on earth does that mean. i am paying 19.99 for the blackberry unlimited internet plan, shouldnt that work as well?

Just go to setting-general-network-EDGE. select APN and change to internet2.voicestream.com, username and password will be guest. then restart iphone.

Just paste the code into into Notepad and click File – Save As. For the filename type in proxy.pac and just save it, don’t worry about the file type. Once it’s saved double check the file name to make sure it says proxy.pac and not proxy.pac.txt

I did exactly what you said (actually used iPhoneBrowser to completely delete the files first before uploading the new files…before was just overwriting using ibrickr). Anyway, restarted the phone, went to EDGE settings and they are exactly as you say they should. wap.voicestream.com (guest/guest). WIFI on or off, nothing comes up in safari, saying it can’t find the server. any ideas?

Browse into the /private/var/root of your iphone and delete proxy.pac and re-upload the proxy.pac. Now browse into /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and delete preferences.plist and reupload it again.
Shut down the iPhone completely and turn it back on and make sure your EDGE settings are still intact. Let me know how it goes.

All this may not be needed. All I had to do was find a program that Unlocked the SIM-lock, if it isn’t unlocked already. Then Do this:
1.) Tap “Settings”
2.) Tap “General”
3.) Tap “Network”
4.) Tap “Cellular Data Network”
5.) Tap “APN” and enter: internet2.voicetream.com
This will only work if you either have the Data/Internet included in your plan or if it is added onto your current plan.
This works on my iPhone 2G with only the “Unlock SIM-lock” hack by QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows

I have the family no contract with web which costs $40 total (2 ppl) – would I keep that or is there some way to ‘downgrade’ to the $10/per person internet? It’s only $20 difference a month plus I think my wife will keep her blackberry anyways but I’d be interested to know. I suppose it would be a moot point anyway.
