Data Plan on a TMobile iPhone

iphone-tmobile-data-plan
Checking my blog stats, I realize there’s quite a few people searching for data plans for an unlocked iPhone on the TMobile network. Often times or not, when you call TMobile, they will tell you that you need to purchase their $29.99 data plan. While this may be true of TMobile phones, it is certainly not true if you have an unlocked iPhone.

Here’s a little tip that is still fairly unknown to a lot of TMobile customers, if you have an unlocked iPhone, you can have TMobile’s data plan for only $9.99. If you are one of the lucky few who still have the $5.99 TZones plan on your account, you can also use that for internet connectivity.

So what do you need to do?

Call TMobile and let them know you have an iPhone and that you’d like to add a data plan to your account. I believe it is called the Total Internet Plan and it should cost $9.99 a month. I know some customers that have been told this plan is not available and ended up with a $29.99 data plan so make sure you specifically tell them you want the $9.99 plan. As of May 12, 2010 TMobile confirmed with me that the $9.99 plan is only available for smart-phones that are not sold by TMobile.

Once you have the plan added to your account, you should see the E (Edge icon) appear on the status bar. If you don’t see it, turn off WiFi temporarily. If you still do not see the E, try rebooting the phone. You may also have to reset your iPhone’s network and reboot.

Once you get EDGE up and running, you may want to set up your APN settings so that you can send/receive MMS.

Let me know if you were able to successfully add the $9.99 data plan, I’m pretty sure it’ll be helpful for a lot of people.

  2. $9.99 and iphone 2G works great.

Had to use both suggestions above
    - called and just asked for 9.99 data
    - reset network
    - set apn internet2.voicestream.com

Called up afterwards and asked about data limits. its 5GB. /month, with no overage charges, just slows down.

first test in the apartment, where normal voice signal was very weak, data speedtest showed 67kb/sec ….. will try more tests later. hopefully it will be closer to the 1Mb/ sec
    but we’ll see.

i was surprisd how easy and cheap this is.

    Hey Carl,

Some people are saying that TMobile is telling them that the $9.99 plan is no longer available. Did you have a hard time getting that plan?

As far as speed, I’ve had this plan since 2007 and it never got passed over 200 kbps.

But then again I’m only paying $5.99 a month for it so it’s worth it!

  3. Just spoke to a T-mobile representative and specifically asked for the $9.99 total internet plan. They said that this was absolutely no longer available and that they had gotten rid of this option a long time ago. Does this mean there’s no longer any way for me to add this data plan to my account?

  7. I called t-mobile and requested the total internet plan. I was prompted that this was not possible but I requested that it be added anyway. Now I have the plan (now listed as unlimited internet on the website under my current services) and I cannot get the Iphone to connect. I have tried all three apn addresses I have found (internet2.voicestream.com, epc.tmobile.com, and wap.voicestream.com)but it’s still a no go (safari says it isn’t connected to the web). It’s been 3 hours since I added the service that I was assured would take two hours tops to activate (got it activated immediately). Am I being impatient or is there a greater issue in my way?

Try resetting your network settings by going to Settings – General – Reset – Reset Network Settings. Then set up your APN, use wap.voicestream.com, username and password should be blank. That should fix the issue.

  8. in order to get the 5.99 internet plan on t-mobile you need to ask to speak to the retentions department. Mention that you want to follow up on an offer. THen mention code tzunl599. That should do it.

  10. T mobile claims that less that 2% of their customers will be effected by the change in data plan and that everyone else will be saving money every month. Seems like a good thing to me.

  11. I’m not sure moving away from unlimited data was a smart move. I think other companies will still offer this and it will likely hurt the bottom line for t mobile and apple hard.

  13. I’ve heard the data plan change won’t really effect most of their customers and actually save everyone money unless they actually go over the data limit.

  14. Is it sad to see the iPod move away from unlimited data. I think there are a lot of people upset about this move and it may cost their bottom line.

  17. This worked great.
One more question though, what outgoing email server can we use to send out email. The incoming is working fine, however, I can’t send out emails.

    Thanks,

It depends on your email provider, if you have a GMail account and you set it up on the iPhone, the iPhone will automatically use GMail’s outgoing server. You have to set it as the default account though.
